Endocrine Disruptors Video

Complex and scary stuff ... sounds like we need more scientific study on chemicals in the environment and a re-evaluation of the "old" chemicals since they have had time to make their impact known. It was really interesting to hear about Dr. Coburn's studies that benzene and chlorine are instrumental in causing defects in animals and humans. Keep in mind EPA/DEP requires all water systems to add chlorine (regardless if there are confirmed contaminates) to all public drinking water systems. Would of been interesting to see her charts on the critical windows of development, the screen was too small. Interesting closing about the benzene being emitted from the natural gas developments - something we should be concerned about with Marcellus Shale so close.

  1. Endocrine Disrupters Video-

    I never knew anything about Endocrine Disrupters and after watching this video researched it. There are many things that contain these chemicals within them.Here are some examples:

    Diethylstilbesterol (DES) Medication Mimics estrogen In humans – female – vaginal cancer, reproductive tract abnormalities; male – abnormalities of the penis and testicles, semen abnormalities

    Genistein Naturally occurring in soybeans Mimics estrogen, blocks testosterone In adult humans – lowers cholesterol, may decrease breast cancer risk. In animals – infertility.

    Bisphenol A Resin in dental sealants, lining of food cans, and polycarbonate plastics Mimics estrogen In male mice – alters prostate size, decreases sperm production, affects behavior

    Vinclozolin Pesticide/fungicide Inhibits testosterone In male rodents – feminization, nipple development, abnormal penis development

    Polychlorinated No longer made;

    biphenyls (PCBs) still found as a pollutant Inhibit thyroid hormones In humans – delayed neurological development; IQ deficits

    Dioxin By-product of industrial processes including incineration Decreases estrogen; decreases testosterone; alters thyroid hormone In female rodents – delayed puberty, increased mammary cancers. In male rodents – decreased testosterone, penis and testicular abnormalities, feminized sexual behavior. In humans – decreased thyroid hormone levels; decreased testosterone; cancers

  2. November 12 Class ...Everyone should understand how water and wastewater systems work. That understanding may help support conservation measures. I have never been a fan of longline fishing and support laws that minimize its use. I think they should only allow the fishing industry to use techniques that minimizes the impact to the environment and other species.

  3. November 18 Class ... the information on how our environment impacts our health is scary. Thought the inforamtion on biomagnification most interesting ... would never of guessed that a toxican would pose a greater hazard to a species that is further along the food chain ... that was a big surprise.
